Gene Carlton Clopton

Our founder, the late Gene Carlton Clopton was a printer by trade whose avocation was genealogical research.  He founded the Clopton Family Association in 1984, the same year his book "The Clopton Family:  Ancestors and Descendants of William Clopton of York County, Virginia" was published.

His book remains the authoritative genealogical source for all Cloptons and related families, including the ancient Acworth, Basset, Belhous, Calthorpe, Chastelyn, D'Arcy, Despenser, Drury, Echyngham, Howard, Jenny, Jolye, Knevet, Lunesford, Maydstone, Playters, Stapleton, Sutcliffe, Waldegrave and Wentworth lines.  Included in this book are also references to other prominent Colonial and Early American lines, such as Booth, Foote, Hoggatt, Kearney, Lane, Michaux and Mills.

More information about Gene would be appreciated and will be added when available.

Note: It is recognized that in his book Gene updated and expanded the work of Lucy Lane Erwin who traveled the US and England extensively, researching the Clopton line in the early 20th Century.  Mrs. Erwin compiled generations of information about our family, and in 1939, published her book, "The Ancestry of William Clopton of York County, Virginia, with records of some of his descendants to which are added Royal Lines; Magna Carta Sureties; Charters; Wills; Deeds, Etc."  Although her book may not passed into the public domain by the time Gene published his work with only the slightest acknowledgment to Mrs. Erwin in the Introduction of his book (see p. vii).
